First Class Diver Training

First Class Diver Chief Examiner - Dave Lock

I first started diving in 1968 and have been a member of BSAC ever since. I have been a member of 3 branches during that time Cambridge City 240 (T.O., D.O. and Chair), Loughborough University (D.O.) and Sunstar 2030 (D.O. and Chair). My main interests are wreck diving and rebreather diving and it’s even better when I can combine the two. I spend many hours researching wrecks and getting electronic instruments to talk to each other and to PCs. This is in an attempt to automate wreck location from small boats and to plot the results on electronic mapping programmes.

I completed AI in the early 1993 and FCD in the late 1990s which lead to NI in 2002. I spent 3 years as Eastern Regional Coach and hopefully progressed the Region into a more communicative state. I thourougly enjoy teaching on ITS events abroad and in the UK and like to see the “switch go on” when a student instructor finally sees the essential criteria.

Recently I have been part of the Technical Group and have been responsible for developing the Instructor QA process and looking at the parity of courses from other agencies.

My role is to implement the excellent work already put into First Class Diver grade and to continue to look for ways to make improvements. I am also keen to encourage more divers to apply for the exam as I feel there are plenty of First Class Divers out there who deserve to have their ability recognised with the BSAC's highest diver grade.

This recognition culminates for many of the successful students in the award of their Certificates at the Annual Diving Officers Conference and the previous Award Winners can be seen here:

2007 Awards
2006 Awards

2004 Awards

STOP PRESS - I am pleased to announce that following a generous offer of sponsorship from Lighthouse Diving the person achieving the best performance on the First Class Diving Examination each year will recieve in addition to their award a Kowalski torch in recognition of their achievement.
