BSAC Environmental Officer

SUSANNAH CALDERAN
I work as a marine mammal scientist for the Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust (HWDT), running the cetacean research programme aboard our survey vessel. This takes me all over the west coast of Scotland. Living and working in the Hebrides, we feel the practical impacts of environmental change and national marine policy as part of everyday life. As divers, I believe we have an obligation to take a active role in conserving the environment on which our diving depends.

I started diving in 2000, and joined my branch, Clidive, soon after. I am a Dive Leader, and marketing officer of Clidive. Clidive’s actually in central London, and I live on the Isle of Mull on the west coast of Scotland. However, it’s such a great club that I’m still a member, still on the committee, and manage to keep diving with them, either when the RIBs come up here, or when I head south. Courtesy of Clidive, I’ve dived my way round much of the UK coastline.
