Disability Awareness

COURSE AIM
To enable BSAC Sports Divers and Instructors to develop their existing skills in order that they may be able to include people with a disability in their Branches; and to give them the confidence and additional skills to dive with, or train, people with a disability.

DURATION
One day.

ENTRY GRADE
BSAC Sports Diver with additional diving experience. (e.g. 30 additional dives since gaining the Sports Diver Qualification).

INSTRUCTORS
This Course is run only by the BSAC Regional Coaching Scheme, or by selected BSAC Schools.
This course must be staffed by Approved Disability Awareness Instructors., assisted either by other Approved Disability Awareness Instructors or NQIs seeking such approval - see Note 4. A register of Approved Disability Awareness Instructors is maintained by BSAC HQ.
Ratio: One Instructor for every four students.

FACILITIES
Suitable classroom with teaching aids for theory presentations.
Three hours pool time - see course programme.
Equipment and materials for practical sessions, as detailed in Course Instructor Notes.

APPROVAL
Skill Development Course Approval Procedure applies: applications to run this Course must first be approved by the NDC Advisor on Diving for the Disabled.

QUALIFICATION
Course Certification will be issued by BSAC HQ after the event.

NOTES

  1. The order in which the syllabus is listed represents the recommended sequence for this one day course.
  2. The contents of the course should emphasise practical solutions, but with sufficient explanatory theory to put the practice into its true context.
  3. Instructors should base their teaching on the Instructor Notes which will be provided, and on the information given in the BSAC publication: Sub-Aqua Diving for the Disabled (issued to course students in their Student Pack).
  4. BSAC NQIs who wish to gain Disability Awareness Instructor status should apply to the Technical Support Manager at BSAC for the appropriate application form.
