Marine Biology
This course is not actually run by the BSAC. The award was introduced in order to give BSAC recognition to members who have studied marine biology to an advanced level, through academic studies at specialist institutes such as Field Study Centres, Colleges and Universities.
In order to gain this qualification Record Book Certificate, members must show that they have completed a course, the outline of which is similar to (and not less than) this model.
AIM
To thoroughly familiarise divers methods of classification and identification of marine organisms, and to give an elementary knowledge of the interaction between organisms, and organisms and their environment.

INSTRUCTOR REQUIREMENTS
Instructor to hold First degree in Marine Biology of Marine Ecology or equivalent degree acceptable to BSAC and its Scientific Advisers. Instructor must have appropriate teaching experience.
Assistant Instructors as required, to the satisfaction of the Chief Instructor.
COURSE APPROVAL
Course Approval Procedure applies.
SPECIAL
30 hours classroom studies plus 20 hours field study at suitable coastal site. Access to biological laboratory equipped with low power microscopes, collection and sorting equipment etc.
SYLLABUS
Theory Topics: (30 hours)
Field Course: (20 hours) To be mainly concerned with collection and identification.
Some attention to the community structure on sites.
Members who wish to receive this certificate should send a photocopy of their degree / course certification to the Technical Support Manager at BSAC HQ, together with a small SAE.

- Characteristic features and biology of major groups.
- Plant biology and planktonic productivity.
- Introduction to study of ecology.
- Reproduction processes and larval forms.
- Laboratory work on preparation and display of specimens.
- Conservation of threatened stocks in the sea.
