BSAC General Information - Careers in Sport Diving

There are an increasing number of career opportunities in recreational diving, both in the UK and abroad in those parts of the world where diving tourism is well developed. With growing public interest in diving and the continuing expansion of the BSAC Schools and Dive Resort schemes, there is a steady demand for qualified sports diving instructors and guides. However, anyone wishing to take up a career as a diving instructor or guide should first be a qualified diver with a broad background of varied diving experience. The greater the background of experience, the better and safer the Instructor or guide will be.

There are career opportunities for BSAC Open Water and Advanced Instructors as instructors working in BSAC Schools and for BSAC Dive Leaders as Dive Resort guides, both in UK and abroad. Within the UK, BSAC Schools and Dive Resorts must carry out their activities in accordance with an 'Approved Code of Practice' (ACOP), prepared in compliance with the HSE Diving at Work Regulations - 1997. The ACOP requires BSAC Dive Leaders and Instructors who work professionally to hold the following qualifications and abilities:

Job opportunities for diving instructors and dive guides may be advertised in diving magazines such as the BSAC journal 'Dive'. BSAC Schools and Dive Resorts seeking staff may ask BSAC HQ for help in finding them, so if you are seeking work as a diving instructor at a BSAC School or Dive Resort, give BSAC HQ a copy of your CV - or send a copy of your CV and a letter stating your interest and availability to Schools / Resorts in those parts of the world where you would like to work.

There are also a limited number of career opportunities in the UK diving manufacturing and distribution industries, and also for employment in retail dive shops. Advertisements for all these positions - instructor or shop staff - normally appear in the UK diving press. BSAC HQ will also assist in placing instructors with BSAC Schools when we know that vacancies exist.

Finally, BSAC HQ can also supply you with preliminary information about Careers in Commercial Diving, should this be of interest.
