BSAC Crossover Information - Instructor

The BSAC Instructor Induction Programme.
In recognition of Branches' needs to maximise the resources available to them, the BSAC has an Instructor Induction Programme to recognise the skills of Diving Instructors from other agencies.

The current Instructor Training Scheme (ITS) requires Members who wish to become Instructors to complete the following courses and exams:
Instructor Foundation Course (IFC), Theory Instructor Exam (TIE), Open Water Instructor Course (OWIC) and Practical Instructor Exam (PIE) to gain the Open Water Instructor (OWI) qualification.

The BSAC has, for a number of years, recognised the qualifications of divers trained by other agencies but not Instructor qualifications. There can really be little reason why we should question the validity of an existing Diving Instructor qualification. Indeed the majority of these Instructors have been ASSESSED not only in the classroom and the pool but also for their teaching ability in the Open Water. However, we do need to ensure that any Instructors teaching the BS-AC syllabus are familiar with the system we use to train our divers and instructors. Consequently, BSAC Members who hold Instructor qualifications from other agencies can apply for the Instructor Induction Programme which will involve:
The cost for OWI certification, qualification card and induction pack is £30.  Contact BSAC HQ after attending an IFC.

New - Since the announcement at the DOC in December 2005, the requirement for 12 hours of logged experience is not required for other agency qualified instructors.

Note: Branch Instructors, with grades similar to BSAC Club Instructor, will follow a slightly different process.

After attendance on and Open Water Instructor Course (OWIC), branch members, as volunteers, can log 12 hours of Open Water Instruction conducted within a BSAC Branch, teaching the current BSAC Diver Training Programme and be verified by the Branch Diving Officer and a BSAC Nationally Qualified Instructor (NQI). Or attend and pass the Practical Instructor Exam (PIE),

By structuring this process within the existing ITS Programme there will be minimal disruption of the normal training system yet it will allow proper integration of this valuable resource for Branches.

The Instructor Induction process is aimed at the smooth acceptance and integration of existing instructors within BSAC Branches and Diver Training Centres as well as to further enhance the acceptance and understanding of other agency qualifications.
