FCD - Introduction

The Objectives of the 'FIRST CLASS DIVER' Programme

Introduction

In 2007, BSAC introduced a revised format for the First Class Diver Exam. These changes had been prompted by the introduction of a new diver training scheme, by changing patterns in the way in which divers progress through the BSAC qualifications and by developments in new diving techniques and equipment.

The revised format offers much more flexibility to enable developments in the future whilst maintaining the same high standards recognised in a First Class Diver. There were two main changes:

(1) Whilst maintaining high standards of practical diving the exam remains modular but the practical element reverts to a 2 day format. The modules are:

1. Expedition plan
2. Diving Task
3. Diving Knowledge

(2) The need for an ERD qualification or equivalent depth experience is removed.

Getting started?

The first step is to obtain a preparation pack downloadable from this site and complete the registration form (either online or print and post in the form).
The information pack contains detailed preparation guidance for the potential First Class Diver, a registration form for the scheme and application forms for each of the modules. After scrutinising the pack, the potential First Class Diver can decide whether to proceed, seek advice from a regional contact or from the First Class Diver Chief Examiner, prior to registration.
We strongly advise potential candidates to register whether or not they decide to embark on First Class immediately - this will enable us to keep you informed of updates and sources of support. Following registration, the candidate's local First Class co-ordinator will be notified, provided contact details and a liaison by phone or email set up. The local co-ordinator can then provide tailored advice on preparation including advice on completing the pre-requisites. The potential First Class Diver is then ready to go.

Quick Guide to getting started:

1. Obtain a preparation pack - email technical@bsac.com
2. Register using the form in the pack
3. Apply for modules when you are ready

The Exam

The exam consists of three modules. These modules can be done in any order but in general the following route would be advised. First, during the winter or non-diving season the Expedition Plan can be completed. It is recommended that the practical exam venue is chosen as the location - this will help later when the candidate comes to sit the practical components. Diving Knowledge can be sat either in March, prior to the practical exams, or in September/October afterwards. This decision might reflect how confident the candidate feels in this area. The Diving Task is carried out over one weekend which involves us carrying out an underwater exercise using a team of divers. To conform with the format used in the other BSAC exams and as a direct result of the exam becoming modular, each module will be marked using four grades (Merit, Pass, Borderline or Fail). A pass in each of the three modules will result in a pass overall. In the event of a candidate failing to gain one or more modules, the modules can be retaken at the next opportunity.

Any suggestions for further items for inclusion would be welcome and can be made to technical@bsac.com
