OWIC Course Syllabus
Teaching diving in open water - Lecture 40 mins
Here we build on the principles taught on the IFC. Recapping the additional problems we face and how these can be overcome. We will see the basic structure for teaching both basic skills and additional more advanced skills in a practical open water lesson. The critical criteria for an effective open water lesson will be reviewed. It will cover the planning, preparation and presentation of lessons in open water. In particular it will focus on adapting techniques so as to provide a safer framework in which to work.
Planning Open Water Lessons Tutorial 90 mins
In this session you will plan within your groups four open water lessons. These are the plans that you will then give to the rest of the group. One of these will be the demonstration lesson to be given by your group instructor. This is a very interactive session and while your group instructor will lead the first plan, you should be ready to contribute ideas to the other plans you do. We will be using the same style planning sheet as introduce on the IFC, and using extracts from the Instructor CD as the basis for the lessons. At the end of the session you will be allocated a plan, which you can then transfer to your slate.
Demonstration Practical Lesson Demo 45 mins
In this session the group instructor will perform one of the lessons you have planned that morning, It will be of a high but realistically achievable standard. The first part of the demo / mimic process. After the lesson, you will have the opportunity to assess it, using a practical lesson checklist, to ensure it fulfilled all the critical criteria. This continues the concept of evaluating performance first shown on the IFC.
Practical lessons Practical 195 mins
Here each student performs a lesson that the group planned that morning. Following this you are able to assess the lesson, using the sheets provided. This further reinforces the ideas of constructive feedback and how to give it, and self assessment. By having seen a variety of lessons during the session, you should have plenty of ideas to take back to your branches to expand upon in practice. It should be borne in mind that these are not formal assessments and nothing is reported outside the group.
Group Debrief Tutorial 45 mins
An opportunity for the instructor to pick up on and expand the points raised from the practical session. It is an opportunity to revise the lesson plans you have, with the benefit of hindsight, having just given / seen the lesson.
Diver Training & Assessment Lecture 25 mins
A look at diver training in the real world. We look at how the requirements of the various grades are covered within the syllabus. How we should actually assess people, and the importance of understanding the required standard for a particular grade. Also methods in which training can be built in to ordinary fun dives and how you can fit training into branch activities. We also cover idea of the introduction of more advanced concepts such as marshalling.
The Way Forward Lecture 10 mins
Here the instructor training scheme will be explained, highlighting the next steps for you to take. There will be advice on how to prepare for the exams, and other suggestions for further instructor development such as regional support programmes will be explained.
Other
The senior instructor will give an introduction in the morning and a debrief at the end. The debrief in particular is likely to be quite interactive. It is also an opportunity for you to discuss any burning issues.
