I learnt to dive some 20 years ago, and had the privilege of being introduced to diving on the west coast of
Scotland . Of course, I was hooked! I ran expeditions to North West Scotland,
Isle of Skye , Mallaig / Arisaig peninsula, and the Sound of Jura to name just a few places. I have been a member of several branches over the years including
Dundee
University branch,
Edinburgh 21, and Plymouth Sound. I am currently diving with Totnes branch, which is one of the most active branches in the South West region and is fortunate to have a pool of very experienced instructors. I am also organising a BSAC expedition to the
Outer Hebrides for June 2008, so give me a call if you are interested!
I am a First Class Diver and National Instructor, and have been involved with diver training for a long time. I have been helping on the ITS since 2001, and was an area coach from 2002-2007. The BSAC is a club run for divers by divers and this is reflected in the huge effort our instructors put in at the branch level and into the coaching scheme. Everyone in the coaching team is a volunteer and a qualified instructor. The coaching scheme is intended to help branches to help themselves. This might be developing the instructors in your branch so that each branch has a group of instructors it can use. Alternatively, it could be about supporting some of the higher level qualifications that some branches find difficult to resource by themselves, such as First Class Diver preparation, Advanced Diver or the SDCs associated with these grades. We also try to develop the instructors at OWI / AI grades and above to ensure the future supply of area coaches!
We do try to get round each branch in the region, but this is not always possible. If your branch needs help from the coaching scheme, then please ask us for help. We rely on branches coming forward, so don’t be afraid to ask! The area coaches are an enthusiastic and friendly bunch of divers, and will be pleased help. If you are not sure if you need help, no problem, feel free to discuss things with us. If you just want to go for a dive, and get to know your area coach, then great!
Much of the general information about the diver training programme, instructor resources, and events on around the
UK can be found on the BSAC web site, so please use that resource for information. If you need help at your branch, then in the first instance contact your local area coach, they will be close at hand to meet up with your branch. If you are not sure who to ask, then please contact me. We will do our best to help.
Remember, keep it safe and make it fun. Happy Diving!
