Southern Region

Regional Coach
Mike Smith

Hello let me introduce myself and then provide information on what the coaching team can provide fro you.
I have been diving since 1983, where I started with Willesden Sub Aqua Club. Moved to Germany for work, what clinched the move apart from double the money is that there was a diving club attached to the organisation, the ESOC Skin Diving Club.

An Area Coach for ten years, split between the European Region and Southern Region. For the last three years, I have worked with Richard as his assistant regional coach. The good news is that Richard will be staying on to work with the coaching scheme.
My local club is Blue Water Diving Club, based in Basingstoke . Mainly my diving is in the 30 45m region, with a few deeper excursions on trimix. I have worked in branches holding various positions for about fifteen years. I understand the problems that branches have.

So, what can we do for you?

Well there is all the usual stuff

Areas that I wish to develop are:
Increase the number of Area Coaches, to this aim, we shall be running a Coachs introduction training over winter. You can come along and look at what is involved and then decide if you want to get involved. To become an Area Coach, you must be qualified as an Advanced Diver and Open Water Instructor, and have some years experience in running a branch. If you want to come to the training, please contact me.

BSAC have been developing new courses over the last year with some going through the pilot stage. I want to bring these on-line as soon as possible.

Expand the Snorkel Coaching Team, so that snorkel branches have their own dedicated coaching team. If you are mad keen on snorkelling, qualified as Advanced Snorkelling Instructor, and want to come along to the coaching introduction training, please contact me.

Expand the expeditions, so that we can cater for different levels of divers.

While these are a few of my ideas, there are thousands of divers in the region. If we are not doing what you want then let us know.

How many of you have had a visit from your Area Coach in the last year. If not ring your Area Coach and invite them. After all we are only divers.

Safe Diving
