Wrecks

Wrecks are a key attraction for many divers, especially in the UK where our Maritime Heritage has ensured an extensive range of such underwater features for divers to enjoy.

One of the key issues in the early days of my tenure as BSAC Underwater Heritage Advisor was to promote BSAC's involvement in the "Protect our Wrecks" initiative and to encourage all members to support the 'Wreck Amnesty'. Details of both these events can be found elsewhere.

This process continues and more recently we have actively taken part in a Consultation process over the wider implications of access to our underwater heritage. This process continues and BSAC will remain at the forefront in representing all divers interests.

Wreck Divers Code
A Code of acceptable Practice for use by divers visiting wrecks to ensure the continued access to and enjoyment of those wrecks by all divers.
Heritage Protection
In 2005 BSAC responded to an extensive consultation exercise, and met with government to discuss the place of recreational divers in the enjoyment and protection of our underwater cultural heritage.
The Law & Wreck
It is not against the law to take material from wreck but all wreck still has a legal owner. The issue with divers is further complicated by the concept of disturbing human remains, stealing by finding, and destroying the underwater archaeological resource of the future.
Respect Our Wrecks
In 2000 A joint initiative was launched at the London International Dive Show on the 25-26 March by SAA, PADI and BSAC to help raise awareness of the issues surrounding wreck diving in the UK and to ensure the best possible wreck diving practices are observed by recreational divers.

Access
This section provides information on where restrictions are imposed either on specific dive sites, such as the wreck of HMS Hood, or general access to an area, for example boat launching.
