Dive-in to Clean-up and Help Wildlife

PHOTO OPPORTUNITY:  You are invited to send a reporter and/or
photographer to Wilson’s Pits nature reserve at 10.30am on Saturday 20th January 2007 to watch adventurous local divers from BSAC Northants 955 Dive Club brave icy cold January temperatures to dive and collect litter from the lake at the nature reserve.  Contact:  Michelle Henley on 01604 405285 or 07725601562
On Saturday 20th January, local divers from Northampton will be donning their SCUBA gear and braving icy cold waters for a clean-up of an important nature reserve.   (The reserve is near Higham Ferrers at the roundabout where the A45 meets the B465, opposite Waitrose supermarket).

Hot drinks will be provided on the day and we hope that the event attracts lots of visitors and some land-based volunteers to help litter-pick around the drier parts of the reserve.

This reserve, managed by the Wildlife Trust, consists of three disused gravel pits with areas of scrub, grassland and newly created scrape areas.  The reserve was formed after quarrying for sand and gravel and is part of a larger Site of Special Scientific interest in the Nene Valley.  The reserve is very important for wildlife especially breeding birds and insects.

The Trust actively removes litter from all of its reserves, however we struggle to retrieve litter from the harder to reach places such as the middle of the lakes, so we are delighted that the divers have volunteered to clean-up the lake on our behalf.

Emma Fleet, Training Officer for BSAC Northants 955 Dive Club said “We are very excited to be involved with the Wildlife Trust’s clean up operation at their nature reserve. It is a prime opportunity for members to utilise their diving skills in addition to helping wildlife.  Instructors Andrew Fletcher and Neale Fleet have carried out preliminary investigations to ensure the site is suitable and safe for diving on the day.  We look forward to continuing and strengthening our relationship with the Wildlife Trust, and hope that we can be of further assistance in the futureâ€?.
