Medway SAC celebrate 50 years with a subathon in aid of Mencap
As part of Medway SAC’s 50th anniversary celebrations, the club recently organised a fundraising scubathon which saw two divers inhabit the back lake of Leybourne, Maidstone from 11am Saturday, to 11am Sunday.
Organised by club chairman Kevin Tarr, the event saw members old and new taking part, with more than £1,500 raised for Mencap.
Said Medsac’s Lynn Sencicle, “The weekend started off raining but by lunchtime Sunday it was scorching hot. In contrast, the first divers in at 11am Saturday found clear waters but by midnight not only was it dark but silted – the early hours turned into a test of endurance as some divers took their turn in near blind conditions. Relief came in the form of bacon butties along with the day shift at 8am to finish the last three hours.”

When visibility permitted, underwater entertainment consisted of golf, tennis, an impromptu scavenger hunt and eel spotting.
Kevin Tarr added: “Everyone who came made a really good effort, pushing on through lack of sleep and the worst possible underwater visibility, yet still managed to make it a good laugh all the way through. I’d like to thank Leybourne Lakes Dive Centre for their support and generosity and the support from Woodstock Divers.”
Medway SAC is now organising an anniversary dinner in October and is inviting past and present members to attend. For further information please contact Les Crowder on 01634 370896.
