Obituary – Ken Farrow

Ken FarrowIt is with much sadness that we announce that following a dive off Orkney on Monday 2 June, Ken Farrow passed away.

On the 2 June 2008 Ken and his buddy surfaced after an uneventful dive. Whilst on the surface waiting for recovery, Ken made his own way to the shore and sat on a rock clear of the water surface and passed away peacefully. The full results of a post mortem are not expected until later in the year but early indications are natural causes.

Ken was an ex National Coach for Scotland (1981-86) and following a split into two regions Regional Coach for North Scotland (1986-93), former BSAC Council member and BSAC Vice Chairman(1996-97), NDC Member, NDC Bulletin editor, chairman of SCOTFED and was a BSAC First Class Diver and National Instructor.  He was also a very accomplished writer and photographer, never being spotted without a camera round his neck either above or below the water!  Whilst Ken had achieved all there was to do in diving, he never lost his infectious enthusiasm, which rubbed off on others around him.

Ken had a great passion for wherever he was and between dives, would take time to paint, take photographs or wander around taking more photographs!

The world is a poorer place without Ken Farrow in it and he will be greatly missed by his wife and diving buddy, Alison as well as his many friends, colleagues and those who have had the pleasure of working or diving with Ken in the BSAC over many years.

“Ken was such an inspiration to me as I developed in my instructor career and on through to becoming a Regional Coach. His commitment and enthusiasm were infectious, inspiring and motivational.
A true friend, colleague, mentor and diver, I will so miss his excentricities."
Clare Peddie, BSAC Chairman

“Ken was a personal mentor of mine and was present through my learning as an instructor at my ITC, CIE, AIC and AIE.
He will never be forgotten.
Our thoughts must be with Alison at this difficult time.”
Sean Gribben, BSAC National Diving Officer

“He was a mentor, role model and great inspiration to me, along with many others over the years.  He was always there with encouragement but also full of mischief and fun.“
Dave Sydenham, former Regional Coach, North Scotland

The funeral will take place at Aberdeen crematorium on Thursday 12th June at 1-30 pm

Ken loved flowers but preferred to see them growing in the ground and so Alison has requested donations instead which she will forward to the RNLI and other appropriate charities.
